One of the best ways to keep this from happening is to exercise. Discussion: What do you recommend for the type of exercise to keep joints healthy? Why? If someone has had a traumatic injury in the past, should the person still use exercise as s/he gets older to help with joint aging? Exercise is the best way to prevent joint stiffness, ageing and osteoarthritic changes in the joints.

Exercises should not only involve the joints but also the muscles that provide stability and protection to the joint.

1. Stretching- muscle strtching programme should be started to achieve flexibility and elasticity of the muscles. Stretching is also considered as a good warm up for muscles before starting any exercising to avoid sudden jerks and stress.

2. Active exercises- active movements of all the joints of body should be done to maintain their full range of motion and avoid joint stiffness. Pendular movements of joints also maintain range of motion.

3. Strengthening exercises- strenthening of the joints and muscles is very important to maintain the muscle power which helps in carrying out daily routine work efficiently. Strengthening exercises can be done using therabands, resistance tubes, dumbells or weight cuffs. Isomerric and isotonic exercises are good way to increase muscle strength. Cycling, treadmill all increases strength and endurance.

4. Active or passive joint mobilization techniques- these techniques involve mobilization of the joint to its full range of motion either actively by the individual himself or passively by a physiotherapist. This helps in reducing joint stiffness.

5. Hydrotherapy- use of water for range of motion exercises is also a helpful way to promote healthy joints.

Exercises help by increasing rangebof motion, strength, endirance and flexibility of joints. Exercise increases blood flow to the joints which in turn helps in removaal of metabolic waste and painful irritants. It also increases lymphatic drainage.

Exercise also helps previously traumatised joints. It promotes healing of the joint and reduces joint pain. Post traumatic joint stiffness can also be treated with exercise. Exercise reduces joint stiffness and helps to regain full range of motion . Muscle strengthening slso takes place. But one should always be cautious not to over exercise the hoint or put load on the joint beyond its capacity.
