Question

helpppp, not sure how to do this.

12. The plot to the right shows four 185K pressure-volume isotherms for 155 K one mole of O, as calculated b 70 135K the van der Waals equation. 50 115 K a. Do any of these isotherms 3 30 exhibit nonphysical behavior? If so, which 10 one(s) and why? Include any nonphysical behaviors -10 0.2 0.3 0.4 0.5 you notice. Volume (L) -30 b. Do any of these isotherms seemingly exhibit ideal 50 behavior? If so, which one(s) and why? c. Use the above isotherms to estimate the critical temperature and pressure of O2.

Explanation / Answer

12.(a). The pressure volume isotherm plotted at 115 K temperature shows non-physical behaviour. This is because the pressure due to oxygen is negative for a particular volume of oxygen which is non-physical.

(b): The isotherm at 185 K seems to show ideal behaviour as during this temperature the pressure is almost inversely proportional to volume so that PV = costant.

(c): Critical temperature of a gas is the temperature above which the gas cannot be liquefied what ever pressure may be applied. Critical pressure is the pressure required to liquefy a gas at critical temperature.

In the given P-V graph a sudden depression in the graph shows the liquefaction of the gas. This depression is only possible at a temperature below 155 K. Hence the critical temperature is around 155 K (answer).

The pressure at which liquefaction occurs during this temperature is around 50 atm. (answer)
