Question
Your patient has suffered a CVA (cerebral vascular accident) also known as a stroke. Damage to the left hemisphere was the primary effect. Considering the lobes of the brain and lateralization, answer the following questions:
1. Is there a difference between the areas and/or lobes of the cerebrum considering function?
2. Would speech be affected with damage to the left hemisphere? Why or why not. Be sure to detail your answer.
3. Describe the arterial supply of the cerebrum. Which blood vessel might be the culprit in the damage to the left hemisphere ?
Explanation / Answer
1) Different areas of the cerebral hemisphere perform different functions.
2) In right handed individuals, the ability to understand language and speak is controlled on the left cerebral hemisphere. The areas involved are Wernicke and Broca areas. So, speech would be affected in left sided stroke.
3) The blood vessel that is damaged in stroke due to left hemisphere is middle cerebral artery. The cerebral cortex is supplied by arteries arising from circle of Willis. Anterior cerebral artery supplies anterior medial surface area of the cortex. Middle cerebral artery supplies the dorsolateral convexity of the cerebral cortex. Posterior cerebral artery supplies the inferior and medial temoral and occipital cortex.
