Question

You're hanging with a group of friends and someone suggests playing a game. The game you decide to play involves placing colored tiles in various patterns. The tiles are red, orange, green and yellow. One of the girls places an orange tile incorrectly. You correct her, laughing, "Hey! What are doing? Are you color blind or something?" The girl sighs. "As a matter of fact, I am." She puts down the tiles. "Let's play something else, I can't do this." "What are you talking about? You are not color blind! "Yeah," she says, "I am, I can see color, I just have a hard time with red and "No way," someone else says. "I mean only guys are color blind. I learned "Well," the girl says, "Doesn't say much for the quality of your education, "How can that be? Seriously, I thought only guys had that." green. And colors that contain red and green. Like orange." about that in high school science class." because believe it or not, I AM color blind." "Don't know she says. "All I know is I have it. Now what are we going to play?" Answer the following #1: How is the trait for color-blindness transmitted? #2, why are more males afflicted than females? #3. What would have to occur before a female would manifest the traits of a c deficiency? olor

Explanation / Answer

1. Color-blindness is an X-linked recessive disorder, it is present on X chromosome. Normally it transmitted from mother to son (mostly).

2. Though it is a recessive trait and males (XY) are having only one X-chromosome, so more affected. In case of female (XX), there are 2 X chromosomes, so it is required both X chromosome must carry recessive allele (XcXc) for colour-blindness to be affected otherwise she will be a carrier (XXc or XcX).

3. Before a female would manifest the trait of a colour deficiency her father must be affected(colour-blindness) and mother may be a carrier or affected (colour-blindness).
