Question

For several days, a 28 y/o male has been complaining to co-workers about being extremely tired and nauseous in the morning. His friends note that he is pale, although his cheeks appear like he’s been out in the cold. He and his colleagues assume that it is from too much partying since he has been attending a lot parties in the week prior to Halloween. By midmorning, he begins to feel better and he vows to stay in that night and go to bed early. The next morning, he is found by neighbors, comatose and convulsing.

What is the cause of the Px's condition and why would simply giving the Px oxygen not immediately be sufficient?

Explanation / Answer

Answer- As the history states the patient has been attending alot of parties, which makes us believe that he has been drinking alot of alcohol.

patient seems to have alcohol poisoning due to excessive intake of alcohol.

The symptoms of alcohol poisoning includes- Hypothermia

- Pale skin and clammy, sometimes they may have a blue tinge. ( as seen in our patient: he is pale and his cheek appear like he's been out in cold.

- Nausea.

- Can cause severe dehydration. If there is too much fluid loss it can cause brain damage.

- Hypoglycemia can occur which mught leads to seizures(convulsion), as seen in out patient.

extreme alcohol poisoning- patient can go into a coma and potentially die.

Treatment involves intubation to help breathing, and managing hydration with intravenous fluids and blood glucose and vitamin.

Patients stomach maybe pumped.

Oxygen therapy is given to a patient who is having trouble breathing due to alcohol poisoning which can cause brain damage and convulsion. Which ensures that the patient does not stop breathing while his blood alcohol levels return to normal.
