Question

This assignment will assess the competency: 1. Summarize key disease concepts. (Ch. 1)

Directions: You have three patient scenarios listed below. Identify which of the patient’s has an allergy, which has autoimmunity, and which has immunodeficiency. Summarize the patient information and apply what you have learned in this chapter regarding the disease process. Support your answers with facts from your text and outside resources.

Patient 1: Lynn is a 3 year old female who was delivered naturally and at full-term. Lynn’s mom has been worried about the amount of times Lynn has been to the pediatrician and urgent cares due to fevers and illnesses. Lynn’s pediatrician is not as concerned given that Lynn is in daycare and exposed daily to illnesses. The pediatrician orders some labs to reassure the mother and the results indicate the patient has low B-cell and T-cell and refers the patient to a specialist.

Patient 2: Tyler is a 12 year old male who is experiencing bouts of frequent urination, increased thirst, and has recently lost some weight. His parents take him to his pediatrician for a normal well child examination where they casually mention these recent symptoms. After some testing, it is determined that Tyler is a Type-1 Diabetic.

Patient 3: Anna is a 26 year old female who is currently waiting to be seen in Urgent Care. Her symptoms are cough, swollen eyes, and a red semi-circular rash that seems to be spreading. The patient was enjoying a new seafood restaurant and had just started eating the lobster she hand-picked from the tank.
