Question
Describe the current trends in college education: type of students, reasons for attending, majors selected, type of instruction, and type of institutions. Do you believe today's college students are getting a better education than students 40 years ago? Explain your response. 5. In your own words, describe the theory of selective optimization with compensation. Give 6 an example of what a person might do to optimize ability in some area not discussed in the book (for example playing the flute, growing tomatoes, or building a cabinet) Apply Sternberg's three forms of intelligence to taking this exam. First, name and describe each form Sternberg outlined and then discuss the form(s) you are using to complete this test.Explanation / Answer
Current Trends in College Education – Today, the world of education has become highly competitive with sophisticated infrastructure, courses, specializations, global presence, industrial advancement etc. Few important changes are, Personalization, Micro-learning and Virtual reality.
Personalization – This helps the students in setting their own learning phase which will suit when they concentrate more unlike the traditional colleges that runs from 09 am till 05 pm. This flexibility in learning will help students who work and support themselves and those who can’t spend the entire time in college.
Micro-learning – Information needed for the course is given as and when needed as against the traditional whole book method. This way students could focus with their short attention span.
Virtual reality – Most of the classes today happens online where the teacher and students are in different corners of the world or students from different parts of the world learn together using online platforms.
Type of Students - Today we have different types of students present in the same classroom, students from different countries, cultures, different abilities, skills, learning speed and personalities. Today, the classroom poses more challenge than ever before. One more important thing is that sometimes students know more than the teacher because of the technology and online learning.
Reasons for Attending – Different people attend college for different reasons such as, employment, promotion, knowledge building etc. Although there are plenty of reasons, the primary reason remains employment.
Majors Selected – Earlier days arts and science were the two disciplines that were in demand but today with the development in all the fields has resulted in opening more avenues and the birth of new disciplines. So Engineering and medicine still remains the most wanted and highly paid desciplines.
Type of Instructions - Today the world has moved from the traditional chalk and talk to more sophisticated instructions. Although the classroom lectures and activities remain predominant, distance education, online courses and part time instructions have come to the forefront. There are also other things such as Outcome Based Education, Project Based Learning, Product Based Learning etc. has taken the place of instructional methodologies.
Type of Institutions - There are different types of institutions today such as State, state sponsored and private. There are also institutions based on Arts and Science, Medical, Engineering etc.
Difference between today and 1970s – There are quite a few such as, technological advancement, sophisticated infrastructure, Number of Specializations, number of people opting for higher education, competitiveness among the institutions, growing industry demands etc.
2. Selection is about choosing a goal that needs to be achieved. At this stage someone selects the domain, such as, music, sports, education etc. Selection is really important because choosing the right field where one really interested is very important. Optimizing depends on the environment where the person grow up and other factors such as societal norms, culture, tradition etc. If a goal that was set previously doesn’t work, one should be able to move to a different goal which they will be capable of achieving rather than worrying about the loss of the previous goal.
3. Sternberg’s three forms of intelligence are Selection, Optimization and Compensation.
Selection: Selecting a goal that suits one best which I did in completing this test as my goal.
Optimization: Developing that goal and moving towards achieving it which I did by researching about it, collecting information and elaborated it.
Compensation: If the goal becomes unattainable for some reason, then we look for compensating with another goal but I think I will stick to this goal of completing the test.
