Question

Consider that a local school board and its teachers are discussing a problem with truancy in the middle school and high school (that is, a relatively high number of children are coming to school late, or not at all). The teachers and board members have different "theories" about what might be causing this problem and, thus, different "solutions" to suggest. Some of their solutions are as follows: 1. Have an awards ceremony to celebrate students who have perfect attendance and also publicly announce (but in a disparaging manner) the names of students who are habitually truant. 2. Give students treats or tokens for showing up to school on time. 3. If the teachers were nicer/more pleasant to be around, more students would be more "internally" motivated to attend school (and to be on time) 4. Have the parents arrested if their children are habitually truant. 5. Ask the students about what they perceive to be the causes of the problem and see what solutions students have to suggest. Consider starting school later so that it will be easier for the kids to get to school on time 6. Discuss which theoretical orientation is best being expressed by each of the proposed solutions. (Several of these could have more than one correct answer, depending on your rationale. There is not just one correct answer.) Be specific and thorough in your explanation for each, composing at least a short paragraph for each response and using vocabulary that is appropriate to the perspective being discussed. If you think there is an alternative solution (one that is not included on the list) to the problem that is described, outline that alternative and discuss which theoretical orientation it expresses Include a final paragraph which explains which solution (or solutions) you think is/are most likely to be beneficial--and why

Explanation / Answer

On the basis of the given solutions to stop truancy among students, the best solutions are the following-

(1) If a school organize an award ceremony for the students who have perfect attendence and also publicly announce the names of students who are habitually truant, would be beneficial to stop truancy. The school can give appreciation cerficates to students who are regular to school or can increase their credit scores. When irregular students will see these kind of encouragement programes for the regular ones, they will be motivated to come to the school regularly.

(2) Giving treats and tokens to the regular students from time to time is also a good solution to stop truancy. Teachers can give chocolates, various gifts etc to regular students of their class or they can plan a picnic for them. The other children of the class will understand that their good work will be appreciated and it will decrease the truancy among them.

(3) Teachers' behaviour with the students is the most important factor that helps in the development of students. If a teacher is good with students, they like to attend his class regularly. A good teacher is that who always knows the likes, dislikes and the capacity level of performing any task of his students. The teacher should encourage students to share their interests with them. This will make a bond between them. A student feels more confident if he knows that his teachers care for him. Good behaviour of teachers reduces truancy and make students regular in the school.

One more alternative that we can use to stop truancy is to interact with students' parents . The interaction with parents and family helps to find out the reasons of a student's absence from school. Parents should get information from the school of various activities on regular basis. Regular parent- teacher meetings, updates from school through emails or SMS alerts are some sources that can help parents and families to have information regarding their child and this will be very beneficial to make a student regular. Several workshops and seminars can also be organize to help parents by providing strategies for improving attendence.

Finally we can say that all these solutions are very beneficial for making students regular but the most effective solution is the role of teachers and parents in students' life because both play an important role in a child's development. If a teacher is caring and understands the situation of his students, they feel secure and valued and this lead to regularity among them. A teacher should be connected with parents also for the welfare of students so they can also have information regarding their child and truancy can be stoppped permanently.
