run a factorial ANOVA in SPSS
The process of interference is assumed to be responsible for much of the forgetting in human memory. New information going into memory interferes with the information that already is there. One demonstration of interference examines the process of forgetting while people are asleep versus while they are awake. Because there should be less interference during sleep, there also should be less forgetting. The following data are the results from an experiment examining four groups of participants. All participants were given a list of words to remember. Then half of the participants went to sleep, and the others stayed awake. Within both the asleep and the awake groups, half of the participants were tested after 2 hours, and the rest were tested after 8 hours. The dependent variable is the number of words correctly recalled.
DELAY OF MEMORY TEST
2 Hours | 8 Hours
ASLEEP 5 7 6 4
6 10 8 4
4 5 5 7
3 8 10 8
6 5 7 6
AWAKE 3 2 1 2
4 3 0 1
5 4 0 2
3 2 1 0
2 4 1 1
Explanation / Answer
It is analysed that group of people asleep remember the words more compared to the group of people awake. This happens because when the people are asleep ,there are less interference compared those who are awake.
