Question
This semester we have discussed the importance of discourse communities in helping to develop one's sense of literacy and language.
We have also discussed the idea of shared discourse and public discourse and how exchanges of language and ideas can alter dominant culture overtime.
For your final assignment:
1. Choose a community (on-camps, at home, somewhere else) that you do not feel that you are a part of currently.
2. Interview 1-2 core members of the community to find out their values, history, relationships to one another, and whatever else you find important.
I have no idea what type of "community" to pick. Do you have any ideas?
Explanation / Answer
A discourse community can be any group of people who share a set of discourses (explicit and implicit communication) about certain values, norms, and goals. For your example. You can choose members of a particular sports club (such as those in your institute’s football team), or those people who are on the subscription list on a YouTube channel (such as people subscribing to the channel, “School of Life”.) Alternatively, you can also interview individuals who are passionate about certain lifestyle choices (like fitness, veganism etc.). People move through multiple discourse communities each day and your choices to select a community are many!
