Scenario 1: Alice was driving home from work one day consumed with thoughts about the dinner party she was planning for that night. Suddenly, she realized that she had already reached her destination and she could not remember much about the drive—which route she had taken, etc.
Explanation / Answer
An altered state of consciousness is where one loses the sense of identity with one's body or with one's perception of surroundings. A person can be in an altered state of consciousness because of such things as sensory deprivation or overload, trauma, chemical imbalance, etc. One may also enter an altered state by chanting, meditating or using psychedelic drugs. There are various levels or types of consciousness which could be considered an altered state of consciousness, such as :
So, the scenario 1 mentioned above is, Alice is an altered state of consciousness, specifically Trance consciousness, since her conscious mind is fully focussed on the prepearation for dinner party and apparently there was an automatic processing of the masses of information, needed by her brain to drive safely.
This concept has been called “highway hypnosis” and was first described in a 1921 article which postualted the phenomenon of “road hypnotism”, i.e driving in a trance-like state while gazing at a fixed point. Some theorists state that the consciousness can develop a hypnotic dissociation. In such a scenario, one stream of consciousness is driving the car while the other stream of consciousness is dealing with other matters. This dissociated consciousness can even develop Amnesia and thus Alice had no recollection of how she drove her car to the destination.
