When we say that we are conscious, it means we are self-aware. Self-Awareness is defines as a state of consciousness in which we focus our attention on ourselves, towards us, inward attention. This is our fully conscious stage which includes our current thoughts, self-image, our experiences, etc. Then we have preconscious, unconscious and comatose stages. Preconscious stage is the stage when we are aware of our environment around us but not fully. These include memories and experiences that are not repressed and they can be recalled. Unconscious stage is the stage which we are unaware of. These contain memories and experiences that are repressed and need special techniques to recall them. Unconsciousness according to Freud forms major part of our mind. An altered state of consciousness is a temporary change in a person's mental state (involves qualitative change in perceptual, cognitive aspects) without being unconscious. Altered states of consciousness can be created intentionally, or they can happen by accident or due to illness.
Understanding these stages of consciousness has helped scientists discover workings of human mind. This discovery has also helped psychologist help create therapies to help patients in many ways. Some examples of therapies include:
