2.Shy parents tend to produce shy children, according to research reported by Roselind Lieb of the Max Planck Institute of Psychiatry in Germany. Lieb and her colleagues studied 1,047 children ages 14 to 17 and their parents. Children of shy parents were much more likely to be shy themselves. Can you conclude from this research that shyness is influenced by genetics? Explain why or why not
3. A survey on U.S. teen substance abuse has found that teens who report watching three or more R-rated movies per month on average are seven times more likely to smoke cigarettes and six times more likely to try alcohol than teens who do not watch R-rated movies. On the basis of this information alone, can we conclude that watching R-rated movies leads teenagers to smoke and drink? If not, what are some other possible explanations for this result?
4. Missy was a difficult baby. As a teenager, Missy is described by CPS workers as hostile, a trait they attribute to years of abusive treatment by her parents, who had criminal records even before Missy was born. Describe some factors, both nature and nurture, that might have contributed to Missy’s hostility.
Explanation / Answer
No we cannot conclude based on this study that shyness is effected by genetics. Children of 14-17 years are at a age whete they are greatly influenced by their external environment. The presence of shyness trait in them as well as their parents provides good support to the possibility that the trait is genetic.Although it can also be that since the parents are shy the children have also been exposed to an environment through their parents to an environment that reinforced and was conducive to the development of this trait as it provided less opportunities for social interaction. Therefore although the study is supportive but not conclusive of a genetic influence on shyness.
3.The study shows a correlation between watching R rated movies and smoking/drinking behaviour. Correlation cannot be taken as proof of causality. Other possible causes for this result could be that their school, neighbourhood or parents have a less vigilant attitude towards their children's activities. The age inappropriate behaviour like watching R rated movies, substance abuse maybe are both being caused by a permissive environment or peer pressure or easy acessibility to these things.
