Explanation / Answer

An argument can be conceptualised as a series of statements that are made in order to convince another to accept a final statement. Thus, the supportive statements in an argument, usually called a ‘premise’ lead towards arriving at the final statement, called the ‘conclusion’.

Two critieria for an argument to be good are:

1. All the premises of an argument must be true.

2. All the premises of an argument must be relevant to the conclusion.

To illustrate the criteria described above, the following example is stated:

Grandpa eats a lot of walnuts.

Walnuts has shown to reduce dementia.

Conclusion: Old people are prone to dementia.

In the example above, the first two statements are the premises. Although they are true (and thereby adhere to the first criteria) this argument is not good because the conclusion does not follow from the premises (and thereby failing to meet the second criteria).

The chief concern of logic in an argument is how the truth of some propositions is connected with the truth of another. It is an important element of an argument because only an argument with its components logically interlinked can be termed as a good one.
