Soha arrived 10 months ago with her children, sponsored by other family members. Her husband has found work in another city, but Soha and the children are living with their relatives and usually see the father only on weekends. They are a visible minority in a predominantly white neighborhood. Soha and the children have a room in the basement. Ahmed is 6 years old; Fadevah is 3 and Hamid 6 months. Ahmed is enrolled in Kindergarten. Fadeyah was registered for Kindergarten recently. She appeared clingy and reluctant to leave her mother. She was unable to complete a simple puzzle or build a tower with 6 blocks. When you meet with the family, they have brought a younger female relative to act as interpreter. Hamid is bundled in several layers of blankets and quietly sleeps in his mother's arms. Ahmed has just come from school. He shows you his artwork. He has made several shapes and connected them with lines. He is able to communicate in simple English, and tells you that he really likes the playground at school and that he is a good climber. He seems full of energy and happy to play with some toys you give him. Fadeyah is holding her mother's clothes and does not want to leave he side. She is not making eye contact when you talk to her. When you ask through the interpreter if she would like to play with some toys, she does not reply and does not take any of the toys you offer. Finally her mother takes a doll you have offered and gives it to Fadeyah, saying something in her own language. Fadeyah lays the doll beside her. When you give her some crayons and ask her to draw a picture, she holds the crayon in her fist and makes a few dots on the paper. Questions 1. What are this family's strengths? What can Ahmed do? 1. This is a 5-member family which comprises of parents and 3 children. Living with relatives provides good moral support and protects from stress and anxiety. Husband can work out of the city with confidence that his family will be in good spirits as they are living with their relatives. As Ahmed is 6-year-old and attending kindergarten, Soha can concentrate on of 6-month-old Hamid and 3-year-old Fadeyah reducing some burden for Soha. As earning potential of Soha's husband is ensured, there will no financial burden for the family.
2. Ahmed can help his mother Soha by taking care of little Hamid. Also Ahmed can help sister Fadeyah by assisting her to adapt to changing situations like attending kindergarten, communicating with friends, and playing. Ahmed can assist his sister Fadeyah to learn English as language of communication with locality, adaption to new situations, etc.
3. Ahmed is 6-year-old boy who is active and playful, attending kindergarten and able to speak in simple English. He can climb, draw things, play with other kids (physical and cognitive ability). He is able to communicate within his neighborhood and adapt to learning environment successfully (socio-emotional development). We can say that Ahmed's physical, cognitive, socio-emotional development at par with any other child of same age group.
4. Hamid is 6-month-old baby boy who is calm and comfortable at the time of interview. Hamid can have good assistance from both his parents and siblings to develop cognitive and physical ability in future.
5. Some information about Hamid like type of delivery, full-term birth or premature birth, presentation (breech or normal), vaccination updates, etc. These information help to predict future development of the child. Example: Chances of developmental disorder may be more in premature birth. On time vaccination updates ensure healthy development of child.
6. Hamid is third kid for Soha. Hamid has 2 siblings who also require parental pampering for some more time, so concerned about time dedication for pampering of Hamid. Also, as a third child for Soha, Hamid may have nutrition deficiency.
7. Soha and children are staying in locality where they are visibly minority. Children may not get much pampering from their father as he is relocated for work. Adapting to new environment and culture may be difficult for children in this locality and cultural difference may influence socio-emotional development of children. As language spoken at home and with local people differ, there might be some conflict with linguistic development.
