Rational Emotive Therapy is based on the concepts that behaviour and emotions result from cognitive process.We are capable of changing the way we think and feel by modification of our thoughts. Dr Albert Ellis is a clinicalpsychologist who developed this theory that progress would be faster if the focus was on the clients beliefs .REBT is considered as original cognitive-behaviour therapy and motivated Ellis to concieve a more effective psychotherapy that addressed the shortcomings of psychoanalysis. In A - B - C Model, A the activating event directly causes C the emotional consequence. B is the beliefs where the true origing of our emotions. Two people who have same experiences may have different feeling and emotions because they see challenges in a different way.A person may beleive that he should behave in a certain way.REBT helps him to evaluate if that is a healthy way of thinking. Fo rexample if a person makes a mistake he comes to a conclusion that he is always going to make mistakes. Such irrational thoughts affect his thinking and emotions. REBT helps the client to to identify the rational thought process underlying those problems. Clients are encouraged to make a list of their problems ,look for what is the causal factors and modify those thoughts that associate with those problems. It is based on the belief system that '' If i can do it ,so can you''.
