Question
During an anal sexual assault, an offender approaches a victim from the front, allowing her to get a good look at the offender’s face. The offender then wraps a belt around her neck, pulls down his pants before pulling her shirt up over her head, thereby revealing her breasts, which he manipulates. The offender never calls her by name during the course of the assault, and she repeatedly sees the offender’s face.
After completing the sexual assault, the offender leaves the victim with her shirt in place, which covers her face. During this time, the victim reports scratching the offender on the legs. She has biological material (including skin and blood) under her fingernails which is associated with the crime. The investigating agency arrests a suspect, although he is discovered to have no corresponding scratches on his legs. However the victim was able to identify him as the rapist.
90 percent of rapists in the corresponding area are male, and 90% of those males are white. Most of those men have less than a high school education although they often hold employment. In general, about 50% of known rapists try to obscure their identity in some way. 40% of these rapists admit to bringing the necessary materials with them to the crime. Close to 15% of known rapists sustain injuries that are visible to direct observation.
The police would like a profile to explain why the shirt was pulled over the victim's head, the sex, race and intelligence of the offender, whose belt they should be looking for, and why the suspect does not have any scratches on his legs. Consider these questions when answering the below:
If you were an FBI trained profiler using the Criminal Investigative Analysis method, what would you be able to tell police to help answer their questions?
If you were a profiler using the Behavioral Evidence Analysis method, what would you be able to tell police to help answer their questions?
If you were a profiler using the Investigative Psychology method, what would you be able to tell police to help answer their questions?
Explanation / Answer
Offender profiling is done in cases where there are no physical evidences observed at the crime scene. Also, offender profiling is done to identify the suspects. If there are cases where no evidences are found, it's is said that the offender or the criminal is going to leave traces while performing his crime. These traces can come from his behaviour, and this would indicate his patterns and actions. These traces are not as obvious as the biological evidences and have to be monitored closely. These would include information of all types such as close observation of the crime scene as well as studying the victim.
Criminal investigative analysis or also known as crime scene analysis
Crime scene analysis is where the FBI would analyse every aspect of the crime scene:
- organised crime.
- the offender did not leave any trace at the crime scene.
- only evidence observed was blood and skin in the nails of the victim.
- the offender did not try to hide his face.
- examination of the biological evidence has to be made.
- the offender did not take the name of the victim , which implies that he probably chose a stranger.
- he might be in anger at the time of the act, and may be following reports about the act, thus able to camouflage his scratch marks.
Investigative psychology
- the Location might be of importance to the offender.
- he is an anger retaliatory rapist.
- it has to be determined if the suspect has any prev criminal records.
- also, the biological evidence has to be taken into account, and the victim has to be checked for se-men samples.
Behavioural evidence analysis
- witness statement has to be taken into account along with crime scenes and its photographs.
- victimiology- the background of the suspect has to be noticed. The characteristics of the suspect, his drug and alcohol usages, family and friends details as well as any pending criminal records have to be checked.
- also crime scene analysis has to be done.
