Question

I need a reply to my classmate discussion post

Here this the discussion topic: The “5 P’s of Strategy” capture the complexity of defining Strategic Management. Select ONE of the “5 P’s” – (1) explain why you selected that particular concept, i.e., why do you believe it is important to the overall strategic management process and (2) explain whether that particular concepts requires more of a perspective of art or science from the strategic leaders point of view. The five P’s are Strategy as Plan Position, Ploy, Perspective, and Pattern.

Here's what my classmate post:

I select Pattern because it is something I use as part of my mission accomplishment. As a Logistics Analyst with little to no resource I am to figure out how I am going to accomplish my daily task. According to Mitzenberg Pattern is consistency in behavior over time. I agree with that statement

Strategy as Pattern: strategy should also be considered in terms of strategic outcomes. Strategies can be planned, but the outcome may not be what was expected. In some cases it may be possible to look back at what has happened, and describe a company’s strategy in terms of a pattern that emerged. In contrast, strategy is either an 'emergent' pattern or a deliberate 'perspective'. Mintzberg argues that strategy cannot be planned. While planning is concerned with analysis, strategy making is concerned with synthesis. Planners are not redundant but are only valuable as strategy finders, analysts and catalysts.

Explanation / Answer

While I agree that Pattern is an essential part of a strategy, it should not be seen in isolation. For example, a strategy can be used to arrive at an advantageous position through either Ploy, Pattern or meticulous "Planning".

Hence, it would be best to say that there is a lot of overlap between the 5 Ps. All the 5 elements should be used in tandem by strategic thinkers and leaders. As pointed out - strategy cannot be planned as said by Mintzberg means that strategy should be formulated with a purpose and careful consideration of a host of factors, what would ultimately happen and should be done, would depend on how a competitor works and formulates his /her strategy. Planning in strategy simply means that there should be nothing called "surprise", everything should be thought through and anticipated in advance. Hence, it is crucial to have planners and to plan to take care of extraneous and unusual circumstances, and planning in its own accord is not sufficient and must be accompanied by the other 4 Ps to achieve the business strategy.
