The concept of peak experience coined by Abraham Maslow, who considers peak experience to be key goals of life, as it is indication of self-actualization. He describes peak experience as moments, lasting from seconds to minutes, during which we feel the highest levels of happiness and fulfillment in the year 1961.
Some examples of occurrence of individual's peak experience are:
1. Individual associated with scientific discoveries getting the results for the first time (new invention of concept or technology).
2. Individual involved in sports or athletic activity feel fulfillment through extreme achievement.
3. Individual doing practice in music may get peak experience while practicing music, where they feel they have lost connection with present situation.
Life Experiences:
(I) Feel of achievement and satisfaction during mountaineering: While climbing the mountains, we feel challenges as steep, toughness, altitude, balance issues, etc. At the start of the activity, person may feel energetic, but as climbing continues, energy starts to come down but not the will power. Every time, we see the peak of the mountain as our goal and every step towards the goal is felt as an achievement. Even though, body feels dehydrated and the goal seems to be far enough, the motivation to achieve sense of fulfillment energizes the climber. When the person comes to middle of the journey, the feel of joy increases as half of the way is passed and halfway to the goal. Here, sense of achievement can be partially observed. After this, motivation to achieve the goal increases and encourages the individual to put all his effort to reach the goal at high altitude. Environmental challenges may discourage the person, but this always have positive side as if we overcome these challenges, sense of achievement will be more sweet because of hard work. After reaching the goal by climbing to highest peak area of hill, one will feel joy of achievement. One will enjoy the altitude, fresh air, and feel of fulfillment of goal. This feel of accomplishment will be like out of the world feeling and divine in nature. At the height, the feel of achievement through hard work results in peak experiences.
(II) Feel of achievement and satisfaction while finding new ways or approach of solution to an issue: There are 2 types of approach to seeking solution to the problem. One is adaptive approach, where we seek solution to the problem by time-tested principles and approach which practiced and successful previously. Another type is innovative approach, where we seek solution to the problem in a more innovative way rather than applying old strategy. Here, we can innovate new ways to look into the issue (perception) and solve the issue (action). While looking into an issue in a new way and trying to solve the issue in an innovative yet simple way, provides a feel of achievement and peak experience.
Life example: While solving an issue of water leakage of house roof, conventional way is contacting a professional water-proofing expert or trying to fill the cracks causing leakage with conventional materials which may not be affordable sometimes. Hence, the need to look into the problem in a different way and trying to have innovative solution. By analyzing alternative materials which can be used in cost-effective way and acting on with easy steps, the goal of affordable solution can be achieved. For this, low cost materials yet suitable as a long-time solution should be identified through researching, which is done by going through supportive literature, asking other people, visiting the local market and analyze the materials needed both by cost and suitability. After this, planning of process to be done by carefully assembling the works that need to be done in a sequential manner. This is a halfway to the goal we needed to achieve. At this moment, one can feel the satisfaction of doing something new and coming halfway to the desired goal. Next step involved is acting to achieve the desired goal by planned process. Step by step sequential process completion gives the feel of nearing to the desired goal. Finally, the desired goal is reached and the job is accomplished. The moment at which the problem is solved and solution is deemed affordable than the conventional one, feel of achievement can be observed resulting in peak experience of joy and satisfaction.
