b. Identify where in the stress response which branch of the autonomic nervous system (ANS) is working and what the physiological responses are/should be. (2 points/1 per each branch w/ response).
c. Identify the two types of distress and how they differ. (1 point..NPC)
d. Explain the three stages of the General Adaptation Syndrome and how and where it connects to the stress response (3 points/2 for correct GAS stages and 1 for connecting responses to Stress Relief) .
Explanation / Answer
The stress response occurs due to relationship between your brain and the rest of the body. Our brain senses a stressor and evaluates it. There are four stages of stress response. They are listed below:
Stage 1: "Flight or fight response": In this stage which is the first stage, our mind is aware of stimulus through senses and thoughts and within seconds, the brain's arousal system activates the sympathetic nervous system. The stress hormones like adrenalin are released, which in turn increases mental alertness. The pulse and respiration speed up which causes an increase in the blood pressure to improve transport of glucose and oxygen and carbon dioxide to and from muscles and brain. Due to incerease in basal body activities, sweating increases and muscles tense up in preparation for extension. Stomach and kidney action stops as all blood is re-routed to organs of priority
Stage 2: Intensification or Recovery: The flight or fight response takes a lot of you. In this stage, the body reverts to normal relaxed state and recovery takes place.
Stage 3: Adaptation: If the sources of stress don't go away, the body changes are retained and the level of stress begins to be viewed as normal.
Stage 4: Exhaustion: If the stress continues for a long period of time, serious health problems arise.
