"Psychology is the scientific study of mind and body and its functions, especially those affecting behaviour in a given situation". Researchers argued about mind and body being two different entities, however, pioneer psychologists concluded that mind and body are indeed two different entities which interact, at the pineal gland. Psychology is a vast field with umpteen number of sub-fields with different perspectives each.
Like any other field of science, psychology uses empirical research to draw conclusions. Conclusions are derived by using scientific research with substantiate proofs. It does not rely on any illogical reasoning.
The first step in a scientific method of study, typically involves understanding the world and making an observation. For instance, you want to understand whether intelligence is affected by cultural backgrounds. The next step is to form a hypothesis. A hypothesis is a tentative solution stated by an experimenter at the beginning of his research. You then form a hypothesis for your study, which suggests that, there is a correlation between intelligence and cultural backgrounds. The next step would include testing the hypothesis. In order to test the hypothesis, you need to choose a form of research. For instance, you can conduct an experiment by taking two groups, control group and the experimental group and carry on with your research. Once the study ends, you will have to analyze the results. Conclude whether the hypothesis stated above stands corrected or rejected (incorrect). The last step is to conclude the research and report the results.
There are different schools in psychology, each with different perspectives and approaches in the realm of psychology.
Psychology is not about 'reading' minds or simply common sense. It a lot more complex than that.
