The three basic reflexes that exist in infants are described as under:
Moro reflex - Also called the startle reflex, it usually occurs when there is a loud sound or sudden movement that alarms the infant. The result is that the infant throws back his or her head, extends out his or her limbs, cries, then pulls the limbs back in. This reflex served an evolutionary function when mothers were required to carry their babies all day. The Moro reflex would enable the infant to embrace their mother and regain their hold on the mother’s body.
Grasp reflex - This reflex occurs when an infant's palm is stroked, causing him or her to close the fingers in an attempt to form a fist. The main purpose of this reflex is believed to aid the infant's hand muscles for developing voluntary grasping in the future.
These reflexes are found only in the first few months of human development. Moro reflex only lasts until the baby is about 2 months old, Rooting reflex for the first 4 months, and Grasp reflex until about 5 to 6 months of age.
