The major steps involved in designing a team include diagnosing the complexity, interdependence, objectives and goals to be met, finding the right people for different tasks (in alignment with their competencies), etc. Other organisational processes like information exchange, decision making, collaboration, and underlying organisational dynamics need to be incorporated as well while leading a team. While dealing with different levels of the organisation, the communication chain and it's effectiveness shall be checked and the lags (if any) are to be resolved. While leading a team at executive level, appropriate exchange of information in the correct hierarchial order depending on the structure of the organisation need to be ensured.
For ensuring the appropriateness of the members, the skill set and competencies are the most crucial element along with the nature of their work temperament (whether they are people oriented or task oriented workers) before assigning roles and responsibilities.
For ongoing team dynamics, some of the essential elements are collaboration, communication, decision making, team effectiveness, exchange of information, level of individual subjectivity encouraged, openness and flexibility of operation, etc.
To evaluate the functioning and productivity of the organisation, the collective team dynamics, output in terms of performance, smoothness of operation are to be looked at.
Compassion is a significant attribute of many religions and philosophies, including a Christian worldview, as well as being important for both authentic and servant leadership. Sensitization workshops by resource persons or appropriate team members will help create awareness regarding the team spirit and how respectful exchange is important in organisations to ensure smooth functioning. Compassion, empathy and humility are basic virtues without which, achievements may end up having little or no meaning inthe longer run. Immediate gratification is never the larger goal of an organisation and in order to maintain long term effectiveness, a sense of togetherness and basic affiliation is required to sustain members. A good leader is one who has the ability to inculcate these values in their team and build a spirit of unison amidst them in order to work together on common goals and objectives.
