Question

Reflect on the process of critical thinking. Share what you think of the Critical Thinking Model.

· Examples:

o  Have I or would I use this model or part of it in my everyday life.

o  What ethical principles do I rely on consistently?

please follow this example

Personally I thought that the Critical Thinking Model was very helpful I have in some ways used this model in my own life without even noticing it. I constantly look at my own actions and ask myself if I would like if someone turned around and did the same thing to me, I do not believe in double standards the Critical Thinking Model out ruled all of them. The ethical principle that I constantly rely on is honesty and fairness and all of the ethical theories always showed what was the most honest and the most fair.

Explanation / Answer

Every bit of human thinking is biased and distorted based on the thinking capacity, situation, outcome, information and so on. Critical thinking starts when we start questioning our own thoughts. It is a self-guided way of reasoning in an impartial mode keeping certain standards in mind to analyze, assess and reconstruct our thoughts. The process of critical thinking should be used to increase the standard of our thoughts and reduce the egocentric predispositions.

Many people whom we regard as great thinkers have only carried out the process of critical thinking. They analyzed their thoughts to question it and raised these questions to the society at large. Much of our thinking is guided by the society, culture and certain unnoticeable things as the have become too obvious. The only time most people think critically is when they are stuck in situations they can’t get out of without thinking. These situations happed when we let our thought process go in an automated way without questioning it.

The best example of critical thinking that happen in my everyday life is the reflection I do at the end of the day. It is also known as introspection. I feel that at the end of a day I need to analyze my thoughts and actions. While doing so, I use every ‘W’ question on each of these thoughts and actions. After doing so, I also think of possible actions or responses which may be more appropriate. This helps in situations which I may encounter in future.

The Critical Thinking Model based on Foundation for Critical Thinking is a very elaborate and descriptive model. It states eight elemental structure which every thought can be divided into: Point of View, Purpose, Question at Issue, Information, Interpretation and inference, Concepts, Assumptions and Implications and Consequences. Each of the elements leaves a large thing space. There are multiple questions under each element and these are relative to each other. If I am thinking based on these structures and I change any position on any one then it has implications on the others as well. The model involves thinking in a very detailed manner which may get complex at times and interfere with the conclusion and consume a lot of time. Secondly, I feel that it doesn’t offer a structured process and it is very easy to get lost. Third it requires breaking thoughts into small meaningless or unrelated bits.

It is very important to keep ethical principles in mind while thinking critically as it is very easy to make a biased decision. Moral principles which I keep in mind are: beneficence, veracity and fidelity. Although I do understand morality is not universal rather relative.
