Have you seen examples of the extrinsic and intrinsic religious orientations among people you know (or have read about) in your own personal life? Do these seem to be useful personality constructs to you? Why or why not?

After reading the section on the evolution of religion, do you think that the extrinsic and intrinsic orientations would be related to either the adaptive or the byproduct views? How do you think each of the two orientations would be related by evolutionary psychologists to environments of "evolutionary adaptedness"?

There are many people around the world with extrinsic and intrinsic religious orientations. Yes, they play fundamental role in personality construct. According Whitley and kites it has been observed that religious involvement correlate with prejudice. Gordon Allport stated that people with extrinsic religious orientation try to reach or achieve thier personal goal using religion. Prejudice Is relatively higher since they are more into external motives like social acceptance, morality etc. The believer believes that religion is more of means of some other ends. Modern I E scales it has been seen many negative correlation is high in Extrinsic like guilt, rigidity , orthodox and narcissism, fear, Death,aggressive, influencing and prejudice since , they are constantly under pressure of social acceptance and morality. The intrinsic religious orientation gives more mature prospect on religion . The person is more into spiritual and self awareness. They seen the meaning of the religion and God rather than social and environment motives. In the various psychometric scales it has been observed that intrinsic orientation gives more mature since believer believes religion is end of itself. They are compartivsly more calm , happy and satisfied people. They are not influenced by any motives or social pressure. They more more flexible and self questing regarding God like Gautam Buddha .

Extrinsic and intrinsic orientation are related to byproduct views . According to Frued the consciousness leads to accept the concept of religion to overcome the personal mortality. Some psychologists proposed that religion is a specific psychological process which can infer into the daily life as to create the moral conduct for safety, special narratives and a way to introspect oneself. To develop and recognize one's mind with owns believe and desire. Pascal Boyers argued that religious orientation are byproduc of various evolutionary adaptation. Like survival, dominance and better mates.

According to various religion psychologists evolutionary adapt ness played functional roles in religious orientation. The religion is either evolved due to natural selection or as adaption. Richard Sosis and Alcorta , social solidarity theories stated religion has evolved to have cooperation within groups. These cooperation turns to be benefits which helps in better chance of survival and reproduction. Pascal Boyer who took the idea of cognitive anthropothologist Sperber and Attran said that religion orientation are by product of various adaptation. There are studies where religious practices are positively related to health and longevity. Many rituals and practices are directly influencing the health. Example in Hinduism, basil leaves are considered sacred and used in food products, since it acts as medicine.
