"Beaver and Larry are going to the market to buy groceries for June. While on the way, Beaver finds a lost wallet containing no identification but a sizable amount of cash. They decide to take it to Larry's house because it is closer, but no one is home. They then turn it in at the police station, where Beaver learns that if the owner does not claim it within ten days, the wallet and the money will be his. However, when he tells his parents about the event, Ward insists on placing a classified ad in the newspaper to search for the wallet's owner. Beaver can barely wait for the ten days to be over, making grandiose plans and pestering the police each day until finally the tenth day arrives and he goes to the police station to cash in"
Not only does a good work of art make us laugh or cry, but it should provoke us to think, too. A theme is something an art work is trying to teach us. One of the main themes of "Beaver Finds a Wallet" is doing the right thing. In your opinion, does Ward do the right thing when he deceives his son at the end of the episode? As a parent, what would you have done? As parents, what kinds of “deception” must we practice for the greater good?

Parenting is one of the toughest jobs that requires a lot of efforts and more importantly choosing the rearing patterns that enhance the overall personality of the children. Baumrind talked about four kinds of parenting based on dimensions of nurturing and control, namley, authoritative, authoritarian, permissive and neglectful. She said that research suggests that the best parenting style is authoritative which involves nurturance and control at the same time. This means that if rules are made then the reason behind the rules is told to the children.
In the given case, it appears that Ward said the right thing of putting up a classified ad. This is the right way to teach the children the apt way of dealing with things.
Children need to faith on parents that if they are doing something then it must be right. Parents should rear their children in a manner which promotes well-being among children. At times, parents indulge in activities which may impact children. In such a case, if parents decieve children then proper debriefing needs to be done. The reasons for deception needs to be clarified to the children.
If it is for the larger good, then decpetion may be allowed, but if it is used regularly then it is harmful to the growth and development of children.
