Explanation / Answer

Homeless Shelters provide temporary residence for individuals, groups and families who are homeless. Every agency has different activities and events arranged for people who walk in to avail their services. The activities range from, laundry, support group, shower, meals program, telephone, mail, computer lab and etcetera. Individuals get two meals served, they could do their laundry, have someone apply a job for them online, make important calls if any.

I volunteered in a Homeless Day Shelter and over the course of my field placement I enjoyed serving and preparing meals. Individuals at the center get meals served twice a day. Breakfast and lunch. I with the other volunteers prepped for breakfast, everything is made from scratch in the kitchen at the center. It is mostly coffee, pastries or maybe hotdog and corn dog for breakfast which is then followed by milk and cereals.

Milk and cereals may seem so mundane to us, but I was delighted to see every individual savour whatever was being served to them. My heart went out to each of them and made me realise how thankful I'm I for whatever I have. I was overwhelmed at first, However, I was eventually satisfied to see those brightly cheered faces. I felt sudden realisation dawning on me, and learnt it was these little joys in life that should be cherished instead of constantly cribbing and ranting about a miserable life which in reality is the best we could have.

All in all it was a great experience at the Homeless Day Shelter.
