Question

Now I would like you to apply the Utilitarian and the Kantian criteria for moral wrongness (causing harm, and disrespecting the autonomy and dignity of others) to another moral controversy. Consider the case of Polyamorous Relationships and Marriages and, in 2 or more paraphaphs, explain what, if anything, might be morally wrong with them according to Utilitarian and Kantian criteria for moral wrongness explained above. If you think they are wrong for any other reason (than those given by Utilitianism and Kantian Ethics) please explain what that it is. "Polyamorous Marriages" are marriages between more than two adults: it could be 1 man and 2 or more women (polygamy), 1 woman and 2 or more men (polyandry), or 2 or more men and 2 or more women. It will help first to do some independent research online about these polyarmous relationships and the debate over such marriages. Please answer to what the question is asking, I need atleast 3 paragraphs on what is morally wrong in Polyamorous relationships and Marriages in both aspects of Utilitarianism & Kantian. I had an answer a while ago that was not pertaining to the question. Please. Thank you.

Explanation / Answer

Polyamorous marriages, have been a recent topic which is into subject due to a number of reasons. In many of the countries, there is a legal provision to form and exist in se-xual relationship. Many countries recognise such marriages, but they do not provide any kinds of legal protections or rights to any of such couples/trios etc. First of such legally recognised relationships involving three people was recognised between John Alejandro Rodriguez, Victor Hugo Prada, and Manuel Jose Bermudez of Colombia. In many of the countries, even though such institutions are recognised, they are not registered as partners and are considered as parallel institutions to the monogamous marriages.

Though, this is the present situation of polyamory, there are many people who consider polyamory to be unethical. People might argue, that they are consenting one another before doing this, there is the part that people are being assumed as things, in which they are being abandoned as their utility is complete and also, not to assume the responsibility of people who are ones own. It is important to maintain that as well as maintaining the dignity of people, members who are a part of the relationship the relationship are moe important than the relationship itself. Utilitarian view says that any action that causes harm is doing wrong to one self or causing pain. When people involve themselves in relationships which are with more than one partner, they are morally hurting themselves emotionally.

Kant' theory states that the whether an action is right or wrong does not depend on its consequences, but whether the actions fulfill a person's duty or not. When people immerse themselves in such polyamorous relationships, they are not fulfilling their duty towards a person with whom he has been committed. Neither does he fulfil his duties of staying with that one person through thick and thin and till the end of the life. Thus, polyamorous marriages or relationships are morally wrong according to both views.
