Research title- Genetics of serotonergic system in suicidal behaviour.

Citation. Arango,V & Huang,Y (2003). Genetics of serotonergic system in suicidal behaviour. Journal of Psychiatric research,37 (5) ,375-386.

The link between brain (neurotransmitters) and depression has been a topic of research in psychiatry for a long time. Altered serotonin has been discovered to have an effect on the etiology and pathogenesis of multiple psychological disorders. This research, in particular focus on the association between lower level of serotonin production and suicidal behaviour. The study used genomic DNA samples from 178 unrelated subjects , in which two polymorphisms for 5-HT1B receptor at nucleotides 861 and 129 were studied in detail ( methodology used in the research ) . The result of the research revealed that of 5-HT2A receptor gene do not show any associations with suicidal tendency in adults but 5-HT2A receptor is responsible for increase in suicida thoughts and behaviour in people ( result of the research).Since the research focus on suicide and serotogeneric system, it does not give an detailed account of its relation to broader classification of psychopathology under which suicide falls in, i.e. depression. Suicide thoughts can be with or without depression symptoms. The research fails to address this problem ( critical evaluation of the research).

In the module for clinical psychology, the physiology and psychopathology has been greatly emphasised. The theory which explains the deficit of serotonin in brain and its associated with depression is well researched. This research of seretonin and suicide reflects the empiricity of the account of how neurotransmitters are associated with the development and cessation of a psychological disorder. Therefore, I can associate the teachings in the class and the research on seretonin and suicide.
