I wanted to ask for a clarification please. I am currently working on an assignment of male conformity to culturally expected roles. I wanted to clarify that Hegemonic Masculinity is the same as Toxic Masculinity? As I research this, I am not finding a definitive answer and my thought is that it is synonymous die to the male privilege /dominance/ There was one article that indicated that toxic masculinity was a function of hegemonic masculinity. I am not sure I agree with that. I appreciate any clarification Thanks

Explanation / Answer

Hegemonic masculinity insists that men should hold on to their dominance and aggressive behaviour while women should be subordinates who work for men. Toxic masculinity on the other hand refers to the physical violence that men practice over women, especially in the Western context. Thus Toxic Masculinity is part of the Hegemonic masculinity.
