1.Ideology:The term “ideology” is an amalgamation of normative notions and beliefs that are withheld an individual for validative purposes.This term was introduced by Antoine Destutt de Tracy, in the year of 1796 who further termed its as “branch of ideas”.According to Manfred Steger and Paul James,ideologies are basically are patterns of normative concepts or ideas, representing certain powerful relationships.Ideologies help an individual analyse the complexity of their own political and social boundaries.

2.Interpellation:The term “interpellation” was introduced by Louis Althusser, explaining the way in which ideas reach or enter our heads, thus affecting our ideologies and lifestyle.Interpellation can also be defined as a process by which an individual encounters his cultural values and internalises them.

Interpellation suggests that an idea can never wholly or solely be ours, but is instead presented in front of us for us to choose or accept.Althusser also believed that “Interpellation” can be similar to the process of naming a person or calling out their name.An ideology “addresses” a person and provides him/her with a particular identity which he/she then accepts or rejects.

3.Hegemony:Hegemony refers to dominance or control over someone or a state.It can also be termed as an idea or concept that rules the thinking and way of living of a society or a set of individuals.

The concepts of ideology,Interpellation and Hegemony, truly are elements that shape our thoughts and notions,especially in modern times.In popular culture,these elements play a vital role in shaling views and views in the minds of young,impressionable youngsters.We can take the example of “rap music”, the rap music produced in today’s times, are focused on bringing one down or mistreating women for fulfilling sexual endeavours.It also focuses on materialistic things such as money,cars,mansions and suggests that acquiring these things is the only way to be “successful”.Some lyrics of songs of this type of music are misogynistic in nature and use derogatory and racial slurs,suggesting youngsters that it is alright to use these slurs.This is just an example of how the concepts of ideology, Interpellation and hegemony play a vital role in shaping views and thoughts, especially in the field of popular culture.
