Question
What principle of the brain can describe why some cats can see only vertical lines, and some only horizontal lines? (This is a very tough question so just try your best!) Another way to ask this question is to ask how is it possible that the cats could end up with limited vision just from wearing the goggles?Video : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RSNofraG8ZE What principle of the brain can describe why some cats can see only vertical lines, and some only horizontal lines? Explanation / Answer
Since cats have an extremely good vision, they have been one of the major subjects for researchers to understand the manner in which their brain processes visual information. In an age old experiment by Hubel and Weisel, it was observed that the major influence over cats' vision is of early visual experiences. The cats to whom there was no visual exposure whatsoever were blinded for the rest of their lives. On the other hand when they were put into different cylinders to expose them to vertical and horizontal lines, the subjects who were exposed to a certain line orientation recognized only that for the rest of their lives. This meant that vision and its processing was based on environment more than it was innate.
