Question
For items 21–24, write a one-paragraph response for each item (one-half to three-quarters of a page each).
Review the Sleep Research activity in Lesson 2. For several decades, Mary Carskadon and other researchers have conducted a number of studies on adolescent sleep, using many different methods. Describe these research findings, using at least four of the terms below:
Laboratory
Survey and interview
Physiological measures
Correlational research
Experimental design
Dependent variable
Examples: “In a survey, Carskadon learned…” or “The researchers used an experimental design and found…” or “Researchers have found a correlation between…”)
Review the Pubertal Timing activity in Lesson 2. Look again at the photos of the eighth-grade classes. Pick either a boy or a girl who is clearly early maturing. Explain how he or she is early maturing and describe possible advantages or disadvantages he or she will experience because of that. Be sure to identify which student you are focusing on (e.g., “Class 8-A, boy on front row in the red shirt”).
Review the Brain Development activity at the end of Lesson 3. Pick one of the news stories about adolescents caught engaging in risky behavior. Explain it from Steinberg’s perspective. Include a discussion of brain development, focusing on the prefrontal cortex and amygdala, as well as cognitive-control system versus socioemotional system. Use at least one quote from the news story that makes one of your points.
Think of a big decision that you made as a teenager or that a teenager you know made. It could be about where to go to college, whom to hang around with, whether to engage in a particular behavior, or any other decision that was (or at least seemed) important.
Write a reflection (one-half to three-quarters of a page long) on how the following concepts relate to the decision. Explain the decision and who was involved (and their ages), then discuss which of these concepts are related and how. Use at least three of the concepts in your answer (a good answer will include more than three).
Storm and stress
Formal thinking
Adolescence as a “time of firsts”
Adolescent egocentrism
Genotype-environment correlation
Cognitive-control system, socioemotional system
Metacognition

Sleep Research activity: Every human needs on an average 7 hours of good sleep in order to stay healthy. Poor sleep at night results in cranky mood during day time. Also sleep deprivation leads to poor concentration in your daily work.Difficulty in maintaining sleep and/or waking too early and not being able to return to sleep is a common type of chronic insomnia. It has been associated with circadian rhythms (body clock) timed earlier than normal. It should be possible to normalize the rhythms of these insomnia sufferers with the use of evening bright light therapy. Experiments were done on brief naps. to see what impact it does on our body.the relative benefits on alertness and performance following afternoon naps of varying lengths (0.5 minutes, 1.5 min, 5 min, 10 min, 20 min, and 30 min). The ultra brief sleeps up to 5 minutes produced very little improvements. However, 10 minutes of sleep was followed by improvements in all alertness and performance measures soon after the nap that lasted for up to 2-3 hours. Following the longer sleeps of 20 and 30 minutes there was some impairment of alertness immediately after the naps, known as sleep inertia, with some improvement emerging an hour after the longer naps, but not better than the 10 minute nap. It ppears that the “power nap” now has scientific support..
RESEARCH FINDINGS ON ADOLESCENTS SLEEP PATTERN: Adolescent is age group between 10-19 years old. This is the time when an individual steps outside the childhood phase of life and move towards to learn various aspects of life. Sleep plays an important role in any individual but it plays even more important role in any adolescent's life. In a survey Mary learned that the impact of school schedules of adolescents is most often to restrict sleep by requiring an early rising time. Many psychosocial factors affect sleep patterns in adolescents and contribute to the phase delay and the decline of time slept. Physiological measurements in sleep are EEG, ECG, EMG, EOP etc. Researcher found that due to the increase in prevalence of sleep disorders and due to the medico / economic debate on disorders versus lifestyle and wellness assessment, all measurements and analyses on sleep and sleep related changes create high attention and awareness. Experimants were performed on adolescents to find out the positive impact of good sleep in their academic performance. In result researcher found that the individual who had good sleep, were able to memorise their lesson way better than those who didnt had enough sleep.
PUBERTAL TIMING: Physical change in a body of an individual is known as puberty. This generally occurs between the age of 12-16 years old. Different countries has different age criteria for reaching puberty. Weather and climates affects the age criteria of puberty. For an example in India girls reach their puberty at the age of 11 where in US age hits puberty on an average of 13 year old. During puberty an indiviudal goes through various physical as well as mental change. Their body starts to change. Mentally they are restless, beacuse they have tons of questions about tjose changes. It is importants for the parents to be there for their children at that time, because due to hormonal changes sometimes there is sudden outburst (in girls).
Early timing of puberty is known to be associated with future mental health problems. This study aims to investigate whether children who go through adrenarche (an earlier phase of maturation) early are at risk for poor mental health during adolescence, and whether abnormal brain development is responsible for linking early adrenarche and mental health outcomes. The results of this research will have implications for the early detection of children at risk for mental health problems.
Adolescence is a time when an individual starts to shape his/her future. Each and every steps he takes in his life from this point beyond decides what kind of person he is going to be. For an example if he starts smoking during this age than there is a chance that he will be a smoker for the rest of his life. Some individual comes in contact with bad group of people, this group will influence them alot, like taking drugs etc. So its very important that parents of every adolescence must keep an eye on their friends and their activity.
BIG DECISION AS A TEENAGER: When i was a teenager, i fell in love with a boy who was my classmate. We thought our future together is next to impossible because we dont belong to the same religion. I am a muslim girl and he was a hindu, our friends tried to talk some sense into us about the harsh reality of our backward society. When we finished our school we eloped. We were 16 yeras old at that time and that was the biggest and importan decision i made as a teenager.
After eloping we faced many challenges together. The biggest challenge and fear was not to get caught by our parents or police. We had many sleepless nights, stressing was at peak during those days. We actually experienced any adolescents egocentrism at that time, because of the decision we made we were the talk of the town for months/years (people still talk about us). Everybody was judging us. We faced everything together for the first time in our life like cooking, household chores and the biggest thing we learned was to earn. We started giving tutions and thats how we survived those era. This decision changed our lives forever and in a very good way.
