Mar 24, 2011-One hundred years ago, on March 25, 1911, a fire raced through the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory in New York City. 146 workers died, almost all of them women. Betsy Kepes has this review of Triangle, The Fire that Changed America by David Von Drehle. (Atlantic Monthly Press, 2003) At the Triangle Company, the largest blouse factory in New York, the sewing machines stopped at 4:30 that Saturday, the short day of the 52 hour work week. Women chatted on their way to get their coats and stand in line at the narrow exits. Max Blanck and Isaac Harris required all their 5oo employees to have their bags examined before they left by elevator or stairs. They feared theft more than fire and kept another exit door on each floor locked. Von Drehle writes Thcy wer rich mn, and when they glaucd ino th: fac of Ibeir workers thcy saw,wih rar xcpions, anonymous cogs in a profit machine."

Explanation / Answer

Fire took place at eighth floor of a building in New York city. Building was a factory where blouses were manufactured. Most of the labours were immigrants. Mostly of them were ladies.

Fire took place due to lethargic attitude of a person who had thrown the burning cigarette on the the pile of dry cotton. Cotton acted as fuel and fire spreaded to upper floors also.

Incident took place at 4:30 early in the morning. It was a horrible incident. It was a pure case of carelessness. It could have been prevented in presence of some sort of factory rules and regulations.

Fire engulfs each and everything coming in its way. All the raw material would have burnt there. All the machinaries were also destroyed. Huge economical loss took place with injuries which was both physical and psychological in nature.

Rules and regulations are must for maintaining a proper and safe working environment. Government took lessons from incident and tried to enforce effective laws for avaoiding any such future accidents.
