NEHomework 2pdx Homework%202.pdf Personality, Emotion, and the Self in Cultural Context The objectivity assumption- Cultural outsiders are able to accurately describe psychological characteristics and culturally pattern behaviors without imposing culture-bound values or interpretations. 5. Do you agree or disagree? Please explain. 6. Geert Hofstede and Robert McCrae (2004) report that dimensions of culture, such as individualism, are correlated with specific personality traits, such as extraversion. The cuiture and personality research of the 1930s and 1940s assumed that cultural practices shape personality. Hofstede&McCrae, however view personality traits as largely inherited. Thus, they reason that different personality traits would give rise to different cultural practices. How might you explain why a society that has more extraverts would become individualist and a society that has more introverts would become collectivist?Explanation / Answer
5. The aim of cultural studies is to understand the various elements and dimensions of a culture in its own context. This requires a qualitative study. Qualitative studies have greater chances of being influenced by the personal bias of the researcher. The researcher whether the insider that is belong to the same culture they are studying about or is an outsider that is doesn't belong to the culture that they are studying about, the most important condition is to be aware of one's personal bias that may interfere with studies. Hence, eliminating one's own bias is important than being an cultural outsider. I disagree with this statement.
2. The society that has more extraverts would promote speech and self expression as a major aspect of their culture. The individuals will be encouraged to express their individual freedom, their creativity, style, their choice of spiriuality and religion etc in a more dominant manner. This would make the society a individualistic society.
The society that has more introverts would prefer to be more thoughful and self-disciplined while choosing to speak and express themselves. They would consider for the impact of their speech and actions self expression on others. Thus, a society that has more introverts would become a collectivist.
