The existing research on alcohol consumption demonstrates that alcohol seems to interfere with the ability to form new long-term memories. Research observes that drunk persons are able to recall information immediately after it is presented and even keep it active in short-term memory typically for one minute or more but as the time progresses it is observed that the mechanism that transfers the information from short–term to long–term storage is hindered. Alcohol does not seem to influence the long-term memories or the memories established prior to drinking. These impairments are known as blackouts. This kind of memory loss is directly proportional to the amount of alcohol consumed. Studies show that alcohol consumption causes disruption in the activity of the hippocampus. Hippocampus is region in the brain region that plays important role in the formation of new auotbiographical memories.
