Cisneros, H. (2013, October 17). Elderly will need help as they age at home. The New York Times. http://www.nytimes.com/roomfordebate/ 2013/10/16/housing-thats-not-a-luxury/elderly-will-need-help-as-they- age-at-home This opinion piece by Henry Cisneros, former secretary of the U.S Department of Housing and Urban Development, contends that housing options in America are not prepared for older adults' growing desire to "age in place." What is the major problem that Cisneros presents in this article? Why is this problem becoming more urgent as time passes? What properties does a house need to have to be safe for older adults? Attempt to brainstorm beyond the properties Cisneros mentions in the article. What solutions can you think of to address the issue Cisneros presents? What do you think will actually happen in the coming decades?

Explanation / Answer

One of the most important things is the wish that people who retire would like to live their rest of the life at their own houses and not in a government's home for the elderly. Although there are lots of homes for the elderly, Henry Cisneros says that these homes do not have modern facilities that would ease the life o the elderly. Besides the cost of running these homes are becoming too high. Elderly wishing to live in their own houses is a very good idea but it would pose other problems too such as immediate nursing care, food on time if they are not capable of cooking, getting services done quickly and more importantly someone to talk to. Their safety and security would also become more important as they won't have anyone living with them. Individualistic culture has transformed the lives of the elderly entirely as their sons and daughters do not want to live with them or take their parents with them. This leaves them on their own thus it becomes the duty of the State to look after them and after all, they all worked for the nation. In the future, either the State will have to modernize and improve the facilities in home for the elderly or they have to spend more to provide individual housing and other required facilities to the elderly.
