Question

A 140 lb female is exercising at an intensity of 40% of their VO2max, which was determined by indirect calorimetry to be 58 ml/kg/min.  At this intensity, her RER was measured to be 0.85.

A) What is her metabolic rate?

B) What is her exercise intenisty in METS? Name two activites that roughly approximate to this exercise intensity?

C) If she exercised at this intensity for an hour, how many total calories would she expend?

D) What % of calories expened in that hour were from carbohydrate oxidation as opposed to fat oxidation?

E) What is directly measured in order to obtain RER?

Explanation / Answer

ANSWER A. We have to need height and weight of body to fond out the metabolic rate of that person. Since, a women heve weight 140 lb exercising with intensity of 40% of her VO2 max. The RER of her body is 0.85 that so we can tell many terms about her metabolism.

RER is stands for respiratory rate equivalent that is the ratio of VCO2 and VO2. The ratio less than one indicate that more amount of CO2 is producing in body and it occurs when the body has more amount of fat as a burning fuel. Hence, we can say that her metabolic is approx. going down than a basal metabolic rate.

ANSWER B. The METS is known as the metabolic equivalent that indicates the intensity of exercise and the consumption of oxygen during 1 minute by any person. Since, the woman has weight in kg about to 70 kg (140 lb). Hence, according given rate 58 ml/kg/min her body METS would be 406 ml/min.

And the two activities those affect it ( metabolic equivalent ) are her oxygen uptake and the food that the woman is eating.

ANSWER E. The directly measure to obtain RER is the ratio of VCO2 and VO2 that gives the information about the food and metabolism of any person.
