Question

Part I-What?! Sitting in the waiting room at the dermatologist's office, Bill couldn't believe what he had just heard. How could this be happening to him? Sure, he sunburned easily and his hair was red, but he was an accountant! How could he have skin cancer? When he had developed the sore on his chest a month ago, he had thought nothing of it. It looked kind of ugly, but it didn't hurt and it was small, so he just ignored it. His wife, Betty, however, was a bit concerned, given how easily he sunburned. After watching the thing," as she referred to it, get larger over a period of a few weeks she pressured him to get it looked at. He made an appointment with a dermatologist who ordered a biopsy, but told him not to worry, the test was just a precaution. That was two weeks ago. Today the doctor had told him that he had a tumor. He had just been diagnosed with malignant melanoma, a form of skin cancer. All he could think was, "What am I going to do?" Explanation / Answer

Part 2 - 1.Types of cancer treatments

The treatment of melanoma depends on the stage of melanoma the doctors are dealing with.

Stage 0,1,2 are not so deep in the skin , they can be treated with surgery (wide excision ).

Stage 3, 4 are too deep . Surgical removal of cancer is a option , but it has higher recurrence chances . So the treatment of choice is radiation therapy followed by immunotherapy .

2) Leaving the melanoma would lead to progressing of the cancer which causes it's spread to other parts of the body .

Once it has spread to other parts of the body , it's treatment will become more difficult and chances of other complications will also increases .

So, Bill should undergo the preferrable treatment to avoid it's spread to other parts and make it more life threatening.

Part-3 -

Now that his lymph nodes are also invaded with melanoma , it means the cancer is spreading to other parts .

That means the melanoma has progressed to stage 3 or stage 4 .

This means he should get radiation therapy as soon as possible to avoid spread of the cancer to other parts of body as well.

Back in 1980s the two main treatments of cancers included radiation therapy and surgery .

So Bill didn't have many treatment options back in that time .
