Question
Public health interventions are now guided primarily by theoretical frameworks. There is a strong correlation between behavior and how it influences attitudes and beliefs about health issues. The relationship is complex and includes several aspects including individual environmental, social, and political factors.
For this assignment, conduct a literature review of journal articles, not more than three-years old, on a smoking cessation program. Write a 5–6-page paper in Microsoft Word format.
Include the following:
Describe the selected smoking cessation program and the behavioral theory that provided the foundation for the program.
Examine how the behavioral theory was selected for the specific target population.
Explain whether you agree or disagree with the selected behavioral theory and list two other behavioral health models that you might have used to address this issue.
Provide examples of how the authors of the journal articles you reviewed incorporated components of the theoretical framework into the planning and implementation processes and then explain the significance of the selected theoretical framework.
Explanation / Answer
Application of a Behavioral Theory
Tobacco is an addictive drug that contains nicotine is widely abused globally. Smoking cessation generally refers to the process of terminating the continued use of tobacco. I was much interested about the British Colombia smoking Cessation Program which helps addicts to lower cost of products which can make them stop smoking. British Columbia is a Health care organization whose main goal is to ensure that information and services concerning its residents both consumers and providers of health care facilities reach them in the right time. It partners with eHealth, a program that uses technology to deliver health services, health care complaints, the legislation and office of the provincial health officer.
The British Columbia Smoking Cessation
This program is abbreviated as “The BC Smoking Cessation Program”. This program helps the residents of B.C to quit tobacco smoking in two ways. First, the program tries to meet the full cost of nicotine replacement therapy products, abbreviated as (NRT) such as lozenges, patches and inhalers.
Secondly, is supporting through contribution to smoking cessation drugs to lower their production costs thus making them cheaply available.
BC Smoking Cessation Program administered these two approaches as follows:
Eligible citizens of British Columbia who are addicts or want to enroll to smoking cessation program are required to visit the nearest pharmacy and discuss your health status with the pharmacist. Though you can get these NRT products without visiting you doctor cases similar to the posted below needs an advice from your doctor. First, if you are pregnant or breastfeeding some of the NRT products may not be advisable to your health. Secondly if you have had any chronic medical conditions, special advice is also required from a doctor. Also if you are under any drug use or any medication attention the doctor must take your full medical history for right prescription of any NRT products.
After an assured go ahead you are eligible to any of the following NRT smoking cessation products.
This products were updated on January 1st 2016. It is important to visit a doctor for correct prescription and dosage direction of NRT products to be effective be.
B.C smoking cessation program through PharmaCare supports two smoking cessation drugs.
Health behavior refers to all the physical, mental, emotional, the spiritual and even psychological activities that affects us. A theory generally refers to a collections of statements that are devised to defend some facts especially tested facts or widely accepted facts. Therefore Health behavior theory is the use of these health behavior to determine a way of doing things in a person or a group of people.
Despite the fact that Health Behavior Theory is widely being applied at a high rate the level of understanding it is questionable. Research today, has it that though most smokers realize that smoke is harmful to their health and those surrounding them, they find it hard to do away with it fully.
British Columbia applied behavioral health theory by analyzing the behavior of most smokers and realize that their major problems were, first the cost of nicotine replacement drugs was too high hence could not spend any more cost at the expense of smoking cessation. Secondly is the cost of smoking cessation drugs was too high. The behavior of most smokers is too avoid spending unnecessary cost at the expense of getting an extra coin for smoking.
Therefore for them to incur this extra cost was a challenge. British Columbia realized this behavior and chipped in to counteract it so as to achieve its mission of smoking cessation. This yielded a return because most people shifted from smoking over time.
I strongly agree with this behavioral health model. This is simply because the behavior of not spending even when necessary is a common behavior to most of us. Many people especially drug addicts in our case could not even afford a meal at the expense of a cigarette. This can also be evident with the big numbers of drunkards found lying lifelessly along the roads especially in third world counties because they cannot afford to spend on a taxi to deliver them home.
This is an indication that this behavioral theory is applicable and can be justified in almost all the phenomena with such cases as our topic of discussion.
Some other examples of such behavioral theories include:
The purpose of this study is to analyze how healthcare organization try to fight smoking of tobacco. Theories are used to formulate, predict and understand facts or phenomena so as to extend the existing knowledge about it. It creates a different understanding and the perspective of approaching a re-known fact.
Theoretical framework is series of steps or approaches that can support a theory of a research study. It describes a theory which explains why a research topic which is being studied exist.
Smoking cessation program article by British Columbia applied behavioral health theory to resolve smoking in the member countries. Theoretical framework is thus necessary for the prediction of behavior for this study so as to clearly define how British Columbia has tried its best to fight against smoking of tobacco.
Examples of theoretical frameworks approaches used in this study include the Theory of Reasoned Action (TRH). It is also applicable in many research because it is not complex in understanding and applying in research topics. Theory of Reasoned Action is also one of the most tested behavioral health theory. The results of the test indicated that concepts of attitude, the subjective norms and the perceived behavioral control justify the large amounts of variation in the need to establish another different behavior setting.
Significance of the Theory of Reasoned Action
Theory of Reasoned Action (TRA) is widely used to predict the way individuals behave basing on their pre-existing behavioral aims and even their initial attitude. It aims at giving a vivid explanation of the relationship that exist between the attitude of a human action and his or her behaviors.
Conclusion
The purpose of this study was to research on smoking cessation program with reference to an organization. This study is based on British Columbia smoking cessation program and it highlights how the programmed has successfully attained success due to its appropriate approaches. British Columbia has been at the epitome of maximizing its goal of smoking cessation program for a good period of time because of how it organizes its activities through the application of good theoretical frameworks. These frameworks when well applied and followed yield the best conclusion as the case of the program of study.
