Question
haryngitis 4 Explain why infectious otitis media (inflammation of the midle ear) miay resü in á simulta (inflammation of the throat). 5 Oroscderosis is a conditión that results in irrègular'ossificarion (bone fortmation) around the stapes bone. Would you expect this to result in conductive or in sensorineural hearing loss? What results would you expect from the Rinne and Weber tests in an individual with otosclerosis? 6 The chemoreceptors of the tongue respond to monosaccharides Isugars), metal ions (salty tastes), al kaloids (bitter tastes acids (sour tastes), and glutamic acid (umami.-or savory tástes). Whic Why? (Hint: One of the five types of chemicals is present in many plant poisons. H type of receptor do yout think is most senExplanation / Answer
4. Otitis media (inflammation of middle ear) and pharyngitis (inflammation of pharynx). Pharynx is connected to middle ear by Eustachian tube. This helps in maintaining normal pressure in middle ear and preventing growth of microorganisms. But during pharyngitis there is production of mucus in pharynx and nose ( nasopharynx) which leads to blockage of eustachian tube it allows bacteria to grow in middle ear causing otitis media.
5. As in otosclerosis there is production of bone tissue, ossification, around stapes which is a part of auditory conduction and lies in middle ear. So it will lead to conductive deafness because the pathway is not involving nerves or inner ear.
Rinne test - it determines whether there is conductive deafness or sensorineural deafness. In conductive deafness the patient will hear the vibration of tuning fork for lesser time next to his ear than when tuning fork is placed on mastoid. Means Bone conduction is better than Air conduction.
Weber test- when vibrating tuning fork is placed on middle of forehead the ear with conductive deafness will hear more because there is masking of noise present in environment due to conductive deafness causing poor Air conduction.
