hapter 1: Introduction to Data Communications Why are network layers important in data communications network? What would be a drawback in using layered network model List the five layers of the Internet network model (or the seven layers of the OSI network model) and explain what each layer does for data communications. You need to also give at least one example protocol (e.g., POP) for each layer. Explain how a message is transmitted from one computer to another using layers (e.g the five layers in the Internet model). Be sure to explain how PDUs at different layers are created (organized) at the sender's end and processed at the receiver's end 1. 2. 3.Explanation / Answer
Question 1
Network layer is one of the important layer in data communications network. Network layer is responsible packaging and transformation of various information between various environments. It defines or shows how communication should will be occurring between the layers.
One of the main drawback of using layered network model is the complexity. And also the overheads will be a drawback the end points are strictly monitored.
Question 2
The five layers of the Internet network model are as follows
a.Physical Layer
It is needed for the connection of all the hardware under the network layer.
b.Network Layer
Network layer is responsible packaging and transformation of various information between various environments. It defines or shows how communication should will be occurring between the layers.
c.Internet Layer
It is responsible for giving all the network addressing and the routing.
d.Transport Layer
Transport layer is responsible for the managing the data consistency function.
e.Process and Application Layer
Process and Application Layer is responsible for providing the application services to various users and programs.
Question 3
First the application layer are used by the network layer which takes the message and breaks down into numerous small messages. After breaking down it chalk out the network route and records the message information before passing them to the data link layer. The data link layer in turn formats the message to ensure when to transfer to the physical media. It also check for any error during the transmission. After the physical layer takes the message and push it to the sender.
