Question
As we have learned from our readings in the text, one of the primary functions of the urinary system is to maintain homeostasis by eliminating wastes while regulating the delicate balance of water and electrolytes within the body. Begin your response to this discussion question by reviewing the normal components of urine. After this, consider the following: Urine is commonly thought of as “sterile”. Using your knowledge of the normal contents of urine, is this assumption correct? If not, why? If so, does urine have any practical uses?
Explanation / Answer
The normal contents of urine in a healthy person are urea, Sodium, Potassium, Creatinine and other dissolved ions and inorganic and organic compound.
Urine is sterile while produced in the kidney and stored in the urinary bladder but as it leaves the bladder and comes in the contamination of skin or to foreign particles or untidy area it becomes non sterile.
Urine is used as an excellent fertilizer and has medicinal use also. As it contains high amount of nitrogen which is provided by the presence of urea and acts as a high nitrogen liquid fertilizer by the process of nitrogen fixing with the roots of the plants.
