Selected Answers: a. the countercurrent exchange between the arterial and venous blood in the capillaries C. low pH in the gas gland a. the countercurrent exchange between the arterial and venous blood in the capillaries b. the low numbers of mitochondria in the cells of the gas gland, resulting in glycolysis dominating oxidative phosphorylation c. low pH in the gas gland d. gas gland cells adding ions to the blood e. opening of the valve that can close the oval Answers:Explanation / Answer
Answer to the question will be,
a) the counter current exchange between arterial and venous blood in the capillaries.
c) low pH of the gas gland
Explanation :- the psyochilisti fish contains swim bladder which help in the easy swimming of the fish by maintaining buoyancy. The gas gland maintain concentration of oxygen in the swim bladder. By maintaining proper concentration of oxygen in the swim bladder it increases its volume and help in buoyancy. Gas gland secrets lactic acid and carbon dioxide into the bladder. Which causes low pH of the gas gland. Due to high concentration of carbon dioxide and low pH of gland, the hemoglobin of the blood releases it's oxygen which diffuses to the swim bladder. This is called root effect. The gases reached to the body by a counter current gaseous exchange. The gases moves down the concentration gradient. Thus maintaining oxygen and carbon dioxide concentration in the body of the fish.
