Question

you do not discuss your work with anyone, include a statement attesting to this fact. Please show or otherwise communicate all the work you did in answering the exam questions. You may write your answers in between the questions and add/use whatever space you need. (1) Fill in the blanks in the table so as to match the membrane described with the organism having such an membrane: (A) a bacterium living in a compost heap (at a temperature of 50 °C), (B) a (warm blooded) mammal, (C) a yeast living on the skin of an arctic fish and (D) an oak tree growing in a temperate forest during the spring (8 points) Organism % Fatty Acid Unsaturated 70% 90% 50 % Membrane sterol or lipid having equivalent % Fatty Acid Saturated 30% 10% 50 % Ergosterol (B) warm blooded mammal Hopanoids, a-hydroxy fatty acid residues 60% 40% Give an example of a reducing sugar and an example of a non-reducing sugar (2 points) (2) (A) Which reagents react with reducing sugars (but not non-reducing sugars), indicate each reagent that reacts (5 points): (D Millon's reagent, (ii) Bradford's reagent, (iii) Benedict's reagent, fiv) Barfoed's reagent, (v) Biuret reagent (B)

Explanation / Answer

[A] is an bacterium living in compost heap ( at a tempereture of 500c ) hence it should have membrane lipids rich in saturated fatty acids. So in the table row four has 60 % saturated fatty acid. They contain hopanoids to survive in high temperature. The name of the organism is Thermophiles.

[B] Only Tallow i.e mutton fat contains 50% unsaturated fat and nearly equal to 50 % saturated fat. It membrane sterol contains Cholesterol .

[C] Yeast contains ergosterol . So in first column of row 2 of the table , name of the organism is yeast.

[D] The bark of Indian oak tree (Barringtonia acutangula) contains stigmasterol .
