Question

The patient is a 52 year old Caucasian female, born on March 16th. She is 5 foot 2 inches and weighs 110 lbs. See her Spirogram below.

Note: if the graph is between two lines then consider it half way between. So anything between 5.4 and 5.6 is 5.5. Don’t try and be more precise.

Explanation / Answer

1. Forced Expiratory Volume 1 is the volume of first expiration in the first second - the volume associated with yellow rectangle in the graph.

FEV1 = 4.7- 2.7 = 2L

2. Inspiration capacity = tidal volume + inspiratory reserve volume, which, from the graph is

4.7 - 2.2 = 2.5L

Normal IC = 2.74 +- 0.59

Answer : Normal

3. Total lung capacity from the graph = 4.7 - 1 = 3.7L

Normal TLC = 5.25 +- 0.75

Answer : moderate reduction

4. Restrictive lung diseases show reduced TLC

Answer: restrictive lung disease

5. Moderate reduction
