Question
Name: Question 2: The perception of complex tastes and flavor is created by inputs from three senses: gustation, olfaction, and somatic sensation. Name the lobes of the brain and the specific regions of the cerebral cortex that receive information from each of these sensory systems. (3 points) 1. Describe how the neuronal pathways from the body to the brain differ between the olfa and the gustatory system. (2 points) 2. You are studying the response to the flavor of coffee. You begin studying a compound called 2 furfurylthiol that you have isolated from roasted coffee beans. You find that this compound is a ligand for GPCRS. Based on this finding, which of the three taste- related senses could be activated by 2-furfurylthiol? (2 points) 3. 4. You next discover that the effects of 2-furfurythiol depend on the CNG channel. Based on this result, which sense is activated by 2-furfurylthiol? Diagram the signaling steps that link GPCRs to the CNG channel in this system. (3 points)Explanation / Answer
Four lobes of the brain with their respective functions-
1) the frontal lobe-located just behind the skull of forehead and it governs our ability to reason, make judgements, organize informations and control some muscle functions
2) the parietal lobe- located near the back and top of head. It is involved with visual attention, sensations like touch and pressure and integration of senses.
3) the occipital lobe- located at the back of the skull and controls vision.
4) the temporal lobes- located on each side of the head above the ears . They control hearing and are related to smell, taste and short term memory especially visual and verbal.
