SITUTION: Your office is swirling with rumors that your company is about to be acquired by a large multinational corporation. You’re worried that your department will be eliminated because you have received a scathing email form your manager about a fairly minor issue.

You are confident that you and your team have done great work over the last several years, saving the company a great deal of money. You enjoy your work and have good working relationships across the company. You’re wondering if senior leadership is aware of your contributions – and if it would matter if they were. No matter how well you’ve performed, your team could be eliminated anyhow.

A. What are the moods, feelings and circumstance associated with this situation?

B. What are some reactive responses to this situation? What would be the   consequences of responding reactively?

C. What are some proactive responses? What would be the consequences of responding proactively?

Explanation / Answer

A. Obviuosly the first feeling will be of insecurity of the job and that can eventually leads to degradation of the performance of the team including manager. Also, there would be a feeling of disappointment amongst the employees, as the message of the merger or acquisition is not clear and didn't come up directly from the management. It is the responsibility of the management to do share strategic decisions with its employee. However, in case this decision was not taken and these are only result of some kind of rumours, then management should come ahead and clear all the doubts of the employees.

B. First reactive response should be to reach the top management and clear all your doubts about the merger and acquisition directly from the concerned person. Also, if the management is surely planning such kind of decision. Then as a team leader, one should ask top management through a formal conversation what are their plan towards their team. So that the team members also get time for themselves and plan accordingly as early as possible. This could may upset the top management but as a measure can be taken for the sake of subordinates. Secondly, we can wait for a formal notification from the top management about the merger or team elimination. This is a more generalized kind of response but may lead to complexity in the organization. Situation could also become more worse and it could be late for both team members and managers to come out from the situation.

C. Proactive responses could be resignation of the employees which were fruitful for the organisation for many years. But it could create a distressful situation in the organization. Secondly, employees may loose their interest in the work. This may lead to degradation in the performance of employees and revenue and profit margin of the company may also go down.
