Question

The frequency of spikes in dendrites of the given neuron is 10 times the frequency of spikes at soma of a given neuron. if the difference between amount of spikes between dendrites and soma would increase or decrease. What impact if any that would have on strength and plasticity of synapses. The fact that number of spikes per given time increases in dendrites vs soma. Suggests that overall increase in amount of spikes in time given wheder in soma or dendrites. Of course with dendrites having more spikes than soma. Would increase synaptic strength and plasticity. Is that what would actually hapen or not?

Explanation / Answer

Synaptic plasticity is the ability of the synapse to increase or decrease in strength with time and ability to proper functioning in response to increase or decrease activity. With the decrease in net stimulus power , and spike potential the synapse become depressed and vice versa with increased spike potential. This occurs via tha NMDA and AMPA receptors.

The Soma works as a connector between dendrites and axon, thus more the spikes converge to produce a greater transmission potential and affects the synaptic strenght similarly, so it would increase strength and plasticity.
