Topic: Vaccinations
Debates regarding vaccinating newborns and children have been in the news in the past few years. Review the PDF schedule of required/suggested vaccinations from Doc Sharing and the 2014 Measles outbreak as a resource. As an MA, you have a parent refusing the Measles vaccine. What should a MA communicate to the parent regarding vaccinating the child? Be respectful of the parent and other students in your responses. If your personal opinion differs from a parent, how do you provide professional recommendations?
Explanation / Answer
Vaccination of the newborns is definately a debatable topic. Vaccination has improved the health standards and are very successful in preventing catastrophic health deterioration. Vaccination such as Hepatitis, Polio, Diphtheria, etc.have saved millions of humans life and are still doing it. Bases on the improved health standards and quality of life, vaccination can be considered essential. However, there have been several studies in the recent past which associates vaccination in newborns to conditions like Autism, depression etc. Also, we should not neglect the financial burdern on parents for vaccination. These are few reason parents these days are considering not to vaccinate their baby. As a MA, if I came across someone who refuses measles vaccination then I will openly explain them both aspect of vaccination, the rare possibility of having adverse effect on their baby and marked benifits of vaccination. Moreover, I will explain to them that it is not only concerned about them or their child, it is important for the overall health of the society. Even if a single child is left unvaccinated, it can prevent a medical condition, such as measles or polio etc., from complete irradication and therefore may put whole society in danger.
